Conductor and pianist Eric Melear has established an international reputation as a versatile performer, setting high standards for the singers and orchestras he works with. Based in Vienna, Austria, he serves on the music staff of the Vienna State Opera, regularly working with the best singers and conductors in opera, as well as sharing conducting responsibilities for the stage music.
As Associate Music Director of Houston Grand Opera, he oversaw all of the musical activities there, including serving as Music Director of the HGO Studio program and auditioning and casting singers in mainstage and young artist roles. As Head of Music at Wolf Trap Opera, he was also active in auditioning and choosing singers, helping determine season repertoire, and musically preparing and leading performances.
As a conductor he was invited by Maestro Seiji Ozawa to his Matsumoto Festival in 2016 to conduct two casts in six performances of L’enfant et les sortilèges and has conducted at the Vienna State Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, San Francisco Opera’s Merola Program, and Arizona Opera. This summer he will lead performances of Sondheim’s A Little Night Music at Des Moines Metro Opera.
